A GROUP of fans of Grays Athletic FC smashed a fundraising target at the weekend and have donated more than £2,000 to the Dememntia UK charity.

The event, a mixture of walking, running and cycling on a 10.2 course including several of the grounds Grays have played at, took place on Saturday (30 November), ahead of the club's home Isthmian North game - played at their current ground, Tilbury's EMR Stadium.

It was organised by club supporter Sarah Smallbone who says: "During the course of 90 minutes, a game of football, 30people in the UK will have developed dementia.

"Over 944,000 people in the UK are affected by the condition - and if someone you love is living with dementia, you're living with it too.

"We've handed in a transfer request and signed up to Fans Vs Dementia to help make sure no one faces dementia alone."

The route started at Aveley's current home Parkside and took in their former one at Millfield before passing to Ship Lane then to The Rec in Grays along the parade towards Chadwell and down to Tilbury.

The initial fundraising target was £500 but to date more than £2,000 has been raised and supporters can still join in with a donation via this link
