ON VE Day as Thurrock celebrated the efforts of generations that have gone before, young people from the borough have passed on their own message to mark the day.

Thurrock's Police Cadets have come up with a simple message to pay tribute to our war heroes as part of our VE Day celebrations.

They've been using their time at home to get fully up to speed with the sacrifices the brave soldiers made during the Second World War.

A statement from Essex Police says: "We thank Nadine, Danny, Lauren, Alistair, Abigail, Scott, Alexandra, Ryan and Molly for their message, which reads – 'From one generation to another, Happy VE Day. Stay Home, Save Lives'."

PCSO JoJo Mitchell, one of the cadet leaders, said: "Our cadets wanted to thank all heroes both past and present, as we celebrate VE Day.

Paying respects

"They wanted to express their gratitude to all those who either served or are serving on the front line with this message – thank you for helping to save lives.

"They will all be paying their respects at home and are encouraging other youngsters to do the same. Thank you."

The Thurrock Police Cadets meet at a venue in Grays every Tuesday evening and take part in a variety of activities, including learning about policing and the law.

They have the opportunity to learn first hand from guest speakers including officers from our dogs unit, our firearms unit and many more.

There is also an opportunity to complete awards such as the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.

If you are a young person between the ages of 13 and 18 and are interested in becoming a volunteer police cadet, visit the cadet website.
