THE government has today given the opportunity for Thurrock Council to ask if it wishes to cancel next May's planned all out local elections.

The elections, originally scheduled in May this year, were postponed because of the pending changes to local governance outlined in the government's plans for Local Government Reorganisation, which will see the scrapping of Thurrock Council when it merges with other (as yet undetermined) local councils.

Earlier this month the government announced it was postponing planned 2026 elections for a new county-wide mayor to give regional councils a better chance to set up an effective mayoral authority.

Now it says it has listened to calls from some existing regional authorities saying that they do not believe that electing people to existing councils, which will then be scrapped within two years, makes sense.

Today (Thursday, 18 December) Housing, Communities and Local Government minister Alison McGovern addressed the House of Commons saying it had listened to those requests and that it was now inviting councils that wished to do so to ask to postpone elections in May – and that it would be 'minded' to approve.

Thurrock Council has been asked to comment on Ms McGovern's invitation. Thurrock is not one of the councils that had previously asked the government to consider postponement.

Our say is important for what we want , after all we pay to have a say and to fund your pockets so it’s not right that you the Labour Party just do what you want , it’s our freedom to acknowledge what we would like to see and where our money is spent , we don’t give up our rights because you say so ,we deserve our say stop putting the paying public to one side and give them there rights and fight for us don’t assume you know what we want otherwise it could turn drastically against your party . You need to think listen and champion our rights , support us not throw us to one side that way people will then listen to you.

Once again the residents are being forced to put up with this nonsense and don’t get a choice to which side will shaft us next … this authoritarian government doesn’t want democracy .. they know that by cancelling democracy they will hang onto their jobs a little longer… maybe the residents of Thurrock will be given the opportunity if they wish to cancel their council tax direct debits …

Right! So what happens to democracy?
There is no real evidence that the current incumbents are doing the best for all Thurrock residents. There were no elections last year. There must be local elections in 2026 - how do we know that the government won’t delay the proposed regional authority changes beyond 2028
