GRANTS are being made available to help local groups celebrate Victory in Europe (VE) Day this year, the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
Cllr Deborah Huelin, Portfolio Holder for Communities, has announced Thurrock Council's plans to recognise the contribution of veterans later this year.
The plans, which were formally announced at Full Council on Wednesday, 29 January, include inviting Thurrock's WW2 veterans to a series of events to mark VE day, which takes place on Friday, 8 May 2020. Current plans include a special tea party alongside additional events hosted in collaboration with the Grays Royal British Legion.
Following interest from many parts of the community, a small grants fund is also available to encourage residents to celebrate the day with a local event or street party. For more information on the grants fund and how to apply, please visit thurrock.gov.uk/VEdaygrants (via the red button below).
Cllr Deborah Huelin said: "VE Day is an incredibly important day for us to recognise as we mark the anniversary of when fighting against Nazi's in Europe came to an end. To make this year's celebrations even more special, this year is also the 75th anniversary of VE day.
"The WW2 Commemorative Events Group has been incredibly passionate and enthusiastic in helping to shape and prepare for the marking of VE day this year. By continuing to work closely with local groups, we can ensure that we commemorate the day as a community and recognise the brave veterans in our borough.
"Any veteran of WW2 who would like to register their interest to receive information about VE day events later this year are invited to call 01375 659944 or email [email protected]."
