THE work of many local groups and individuals in supporting Basildon and Thurrock Hospital has been recognised by its official charity which has expressed thanks on behalf of all the staff there.

The charity says it has been on the receiving end of a "fantastic week of donations."

Via social media it says: "Another fantastic week of donations from community groups, local businesses and individuals. Thank you so much for supporting our staff and patients.

"It's been incredible to see the support our communities have for our hospitals. Across Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, we've recently received donations from more than 1,000 kind individuals and organisations.

"A huge thank you for the continued support we are receiving from the community. Whether it's been a donation of toiletries and care packages for staff, items for patients, meals for our staff, a donation to our appeal or holding your own fundraising event for us . We really can't thank you enough."

And it's not just been gifts that have lifted the staff at Basildon, it's the actions of so many people.

Among them is Colin Wilkinson, a 65-year-old born-again Christian, who helped put up a rainbow banner outside Basildon Hospital, supporting the work they do.

Any every morning through the past week Colin has turned up to stand and clap staff as they turn up for work. His gesture has really struck a chord, and he has told how appreciation has flowed both ways, saying: "I've had nurses coming out to give me breakfast and talk to me. There was another lady who came out and had just lost her nan, and was in bits, and we both had a good cry."
