GRAYS High Street lights were switched on last night (Saturday, 25 November) when the local community came together.

With no funding from cash-strapped Thurrock Council it was something of a DIY event.

Residents enjoyed a Christmas craft market with bauble-making workshop, a visit to Santa with family photograph opportunities and free chocolate gift.

The crowd was entertained by some great local performers including the panto cast who helped to count down to Santa pressing the button for the switch on.

As carols rang out the 'snow' fell and hundreds joined in the Christmas celebration!

One of the event organisers was Grays Riverside Community Big Local's Teresa O'Keeffe said: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the following, without whom the Grays Community Christmas light switch on last night would not have been possible:

  • New River Reit-Grays Shopping centre
  • NWES
  • Dianna, Terry, Jahur and Kate and team
  • Mears
  • Travis Perkins
  • Hammers Support and Work
  • White's Sound and Lighting
  • Chestnut Farm Nursery
  • Grays Town Park Yarn
  • Elm Rd open Space
  • FESTIVE 19
  • A1 computers
  • TACC
  • Kevin's fruit and veg

"This was a great Community event put on with short notice. Next year it will be even better!"
