THURROCK Council has approved an application to turn a house into a children's home.

SunnyDay Haven Children's Home have been given the green light to open a home for youngsters at 37 Seaborough Road, Grays.

The home will cater for two children aged between eight and 18 and will help to provide more places for looked after children within the borough.

A council report said: "The proposed change of use will not involve any significant external alterations to the existing property. The character and appearance of the property will remain largely unchanged, ensuring that it continues to blend seamlessly with the surrounding residential area.

"The interior of the property will be adapted to meet the needs of the children and young people residing there, including the provision of private bedrooms, communal living spaces, and staff facilities."

The increasing cost of children's services have added to a projected budget overspend for Thurrock Council of £3.1 million in the first three months of the current financial year.

Sara Muldowney, councillor responsible for resources, recently said costs for children's services must be brought back to within budget. Much of the pressure on the service comes from placing youngsters outside the borough.

The report said: "The proposed change of use of 37 Seaborough Road from a residential dwelling to a care home for children and young people is both appropriate and necessary.

"The location is well-suited to providing a safe, supportive, and accessible environment for vulnerable children and young people, while the design and operation of the care home will ensure minimal impact on the surrounding neighbourhood."

It added: "The proposed care home will have no greater impact on the surrounding area than the existing lawful residential use. The number of occupants will be comparable to that of a typical family dwelling, and the day-to-day operations of the care home will be conducted in a manner that is respectful of the residential character of the neighbourhood."

To ensure the safety and security of the residents, new CCTV systems will be installed at the front and rear of the property. These measures will help monitor and protect the premises while respecting the privacy of the surrounding neighbours.
