DETECTIVES are continuing an investigation after seizing five firearms during a raid on a Chadwell St Mary business premises where it was suspected cannabis was being grown.

And officers have praised local residents for their contribution to the investigation.

A statement from Essex Police says: "We executed a warrant in an industrial unit in Bennetts Industrial Estate, Chadwell St Mary, on Thursday 9 July, following reports of a cannabis grow.

"We recovered around 500 plants.

"Our enquiries are ongoing to locate those linked to the address but, in the meantime, we would like to thank local residents and businesses for their support and information."

District Commander for Thurrock, Chief Inspector Richard Melton, said: "I understand that this discovery is a real concern for anyone who lives or works in Chadwell St Mary.

"Thankfully, the firearms are now in our possession and we have made them safe. Detectives from our Serious and Organised Crime Unit are working tirelessly to trace the people who are linked to these weapons.

"We know that large-scale cannabis grows are often linked to organised crime, and a grow can bring intimidation, violence and exploitation along with it. I'd like to thank all the members of the public who report suspicious behaviour to us every day as, without your information, these weapons could still be on the streets."

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 101 and quote incident number 114 of Thursday, 9 July.

If you want to report something but wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crimestoppers in complete confidence. Their number is 0800 555 111.
