By Nub News Reporter 9th Aug 2025

A PAINFUL experience has nevertheless raised a smile from a borough man who has £1,300 for St Luke's Hospice.

Yesterday (Friday, 8 August) Thurrock Nub News previewed the fundraising effort of East Thurrock resident John Wallace who was about to undergo a full body 'sack, back and crack wax' to raise funds for St Luke's Hospice.

The event was witnessed – by video link – by members of East Thurrock Community Association who flocked to their club on Corringham Road to support John in his efforts.

They were privy to every tug, scream and shudder as John underwent a full hair removal – including the most private parts of his body, which did took place behind a screen.

John was sponsored by many members in the club on the night with cash donations and also on a fundraising page, which is still open. With gift aid, the tally is likely to top £1,500.

ETCA club secretary Jason Sigournay said: "It was a fantastic night. Lots of club members turned up to support John and we had a great laugh - even John, though I am sure he is feeling the pain of it.

"On behalf of John and St Luke's, thanks to everyone who supported the event, but most importantly of all, thanks to John himself who was a great sport and has done an amazing thing."
