VOLUNTEERS who support the Reengage charity in Thurrock were busy over the weekend, delivering lots of festive hampers to the local folk supported by the organisation.

Reengage, which was formerly known as Contact The Elderly, organizes and offers free monthly afternoon tea parties for people aged 75 and above, who live on their own, without nearby friends and family.

Guests are picked up by volunteer drivers and spend afternoons of fun and laughter but coronavirus put a stop to most activities this year, including a traditional Christmas lunch.

However, the charity and volunteers were determined not to let Christmas pass and wanted to make up for the cancellations and to let their tea party guests know that they are still thinking of them.

So over the weekend each guest received a hamper full of goodies – and enjoyed a quick chat under socially distanced conditions with the deliverers.

Local organiser Loraine Coleman said: "A big thank you to our fabulous volunteers for distributing the gifts ensuring social distancing while having a long awaited chat with our guests.

"And a special thank-you to our lovely volunteer host Nilopher Quamer from TeaLightful for preparing more than 70 luxury hampers, Clarissa and her lovely family for wrapping up all the gifts, Laura, Silvi and Sarah for baking and donating special cup cakes, Maggie for the handmade Christmas cards for all our guests and special message cards, and Angela, Wendy, Paula, Maggie and Janice for their help and to Tesco, J. Malone, Boots and Lakeside for their gifts.

"And to sum up – the biggest festive thank you to all our fabulous volunteers, friends, local businesses and community groups for their huge generosity enabling us to treat our guests for Christmas this year. A very precious day to treasure with wonderful memories. Wishing you all a very happy and safe Christmas."
