A day-long event at the Port of Tilbury's London Cruise terminal marked the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the first immigrants coming to the UK from the Caribbean.

On 21 June 1948, 492 Caribbean people were brought to Tilbury Docks on the Empire Windrush ship to begin news lives.

They were the first of thousands to make the trip and they and their descendants have become known as the Windrush generation.

The migrants had a wide range of skills – they included painters, carpenters, boxers, farmers, musicians and a dance band.

On 22 June, they started to disembark and begin their new lives in Britain. The local reporters observed the fashion of the men with 'dazzling tie designs' and another member of the crew remembers that while on board, many made up some pretty nifty trousers in 'Zoot suit style'.

75 years on their contribution to the UK is once again recognised by Windrush Day and there were a large number of exhibitors, participation groups and performers at Tilbury today and the whole event took place just yards from where the Windrush docked.
