THURROCK Council's leader has spoken warmly of the 'truly inspirational events' taking place across the borough and in his weekly blog to residents highlighted people and communities working together.

Conservative group leaders Cllr Andrews Jefferies picked out the work of the council's Inspire Youth Hub, saying: "It truly warmed my heart to learn of the young people with learning difficulties who have taken full advantage of the opportunities they have accessed through Inspire.

"Their stories show that with some help, natural abilities and determination will shine through and new and exciting possibilities will open up.

"As a council one of our key roles is helping others get the access they need to improve and enhance their lives.

"We work closely with community groups and the local voluntary sector to help develop schemes that will improve residents' lives, and to identify issues that could act as a barrier."

Cllr Jefferies' post featured support given by the hub to young people with learning disabilities across Thurrock have been shining in the workplace, thanks to a new job scheme.

In particular it highlighted the Supported Internship Programme that provides a tailored learning plan, alongside working with a job coach, to allow each student to reach their full potential.

Katie Winter, 22, from South Ockendon, is one of the many young people who have found success having completed the programme as a food co-worker at Ikea Lakeside. Having secured a full-time role at the branch, she now aspires to try her hand at management.

Katie's story is featured in the film below:-
