THURROCK Council's lead councillor for education, who recently came under fire for not responding to concerns over Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) at borough schools has praised the efforts of the Stanford-le-Hope based Osborne Trust to combat the problem.

The Trust has four schools affected by the problem, with massive disruption caused at St Clere's secondary school where a signifgicant new temporary building has been created to bring pupils back for face-top-face learning.

Cllr Adam Carter, Cabinet Member for Education, recently visited St Clere's and Thameside Primary School to see what action they had taken and praised the Osborne Co-operative Academy Trust for their 'exceptional' work in difficult times.

Four out of 12 schools within Trust have been affected by RAAC. The council says it has has worked 'hand in hand' with the trust, offering support whenever it's needed.

Cllr Carter said: "It's hard to realistically say the Trust could have done better with the hand they were dealt, they are by far the most affected Trust in the borough and have managed to mitigate every challenge they have had."

At St Clere's Cllr Carter added: "These are exceptional buildings that provide 26 new classrooms and have been constructed at a fantastic rate which will enable every student to continue face-to-face learning.

"I have nothing but praise for the high standard of work carried out by all staff at the Trust and thank them for ensuring education will always come first no matter how challenging the situation becomes.

"Due to the high level of communication from the Trust to the parents, everyone is aware of what is happening and are happy with the outcomes."

Cllr Carter also visited Thameside and its new marquee which is used by the school to provide a breakfast club for disadvantaged children. Thameside was the focal point of criticism of Cllr Carter by Labour's Sara Muldowney.

The club was at risk of not having a home because of the presence of RAAC.

Cllr Carter said: "The marquee is of the highest standard with heating that makes it feel very cosy and comfortable for children.

"I thank Thameside Primary School for letting me visit.

"I see why the marquee is very popular, has received no complaints and is truly an inviting place. It is good thinking by the academy to continue this fantastic offering."
