THE return of an event that could save lives in Thurrock will take place in memory and tribute to a popular borough businessman who died last year - and who previously benefitted from it.

The free CHAPS health check will take place at Impulse Leisure, Blackshots, on Thursday, 23 February from 11am to 7pm.

It is supported by a number of local organisations, including West & Co, and the Rotary Club of Mar Dyke Valley, where Clive Broad was a member.

A statement from CHAPS said: "We are delighted to be returning for our second event following the success of the first event a year ago when we screened 300 men for Prostate Cancer, Heart Disease, Skin Cancer and Musculoskeletal problems. We detected numerous problems including skin and prostate cancers.

"This year's event has been named in honour of Clive Broad who sadly passed away from a heart attack in 2022 after successful treatment of prostate cancer in 2021.

"Until prostate cancer screening becomes easily available via the NHS, we will continue to provide the simple PSA blood test to detect our commonest major cancer at an early stage when it can be cured.

"Heart disease, strokes and complications of diabetes continue to be the No 1 cause of premature deaths in men and NHS Health Checks provide the best way of detecting early the underlying signs such as high blood pressure and cholesterol that once known can easily be fixed.

"Appointments must be booked online for these tests and for Physio and Musculoskeletal problems via www.chaps.uk.com/events. The only clinic that can be attended on a walk-in basis is for skin problems, kindly provided by the Mayflower Dermatology specialists. So, don't delay if you have any unusual moles, lumps or bumps that need checking!"
