ONE of the busiest roads in Stanford-le-Hope is set to host a significant number of 'speed cushions' - each having have a maximum width of 1.7 metres, and length of three metres long and have a maximum height of 75 millimetres.

It is planned to install 18 sets of the bumps from the Green through to London Road's junction with Stanford Road and follows on from announcement of the council's plans to put similar speed restriction bumps on Butts Lane.

The council says the installation of the speed bumps is 'temporary' but gives no detail as to how long they will be in place. Nor are there any details of speeding offences or accident rates that may have forced the issue.

The council has recently been given several hundred thousands of pounds of government money to introduce measures to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists and it seems likely that the installation of the speed restrictors across the borough at punch points like London Road, Butts Lane, Purfleet and East Tilbury is related to these new measures.

The council was widely mocked for its first stab at introducing safety measures, painting pavements and putting up small signs.
