RESIDENTS in Thurrock who have rallied round to help members of their local community have been recognised by the borough Mayor, Cllr Terry Piccolo.

Cllr Piccolo has written to people who have volunteered to help the vulnerable and shield residents of Thurrock who have been left housebound by coronavirus.

More than 500 people signed up to the Thurrock Coronavirus Community action group and have been taking on the task of shopping, visiting chemists and generally looking after the welfare of their neighbours.

Cllr Piccolo has recognised their service and written a letter of thanks, accompanied by a commemorative pin badge – and he tells of his delight and pride in the community spirit that prevails across the borough.

Cllr Piccolo writes: "The community spirit here in Thurrock is quite extraordinary. I've always thought it, and since this terrible pandemic began the people of this borough have proved it again and again.

Great pride

"Volunteers have contributed to supporting residents with shopping, medication and Foodbank collections, welfare calls and delivered a bespoke befriending service. Going above and beyond while encapsulating all that's positive about our borough.

"I write this with great pride and admiration for the amazing efforts made by the Thurrock Coronavirus Community action Group, which has been the driving force behind this movement.

"I can't praise those who volunteered and those who co-ordinated the efforts enough. You are a credit to yourselves and Thurrock. Thank you all."

While lockdown restrictions have eased, the crisis is far from over and the Action Group is still co-ordinating help where it is needed.

Any resident who requires additional help and support due to self-isolation, worsening mental or physical health issues or due to not having friends, family or local support in place at this time, can call the TCCA helpline 01375 511 002 or complete an online form,. Which can be accessed here

Cllr Piccolo's message was endorsed by Thurrock council leader Rob Gledhill who said: "Cllr Gledhill added: "Since Wednesday 1 April, the Thurrock community action group helpline has supported well over 3,000 residents.

"Thank you so much to everyone across Thurrock who is volunteering to support our communities throughout this challenging time.

"This week, Monday 1 to Sunday 7 June, is national Volunteers Week, on behalf of the TCCA, volunteers who have supported the community during this time will have received a letter and pin badge from Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Terry Piccolo – your support, time and effort is greatly appreciated."
