By Nub News Reporter 17th Feb 2026
THURROCK-based Impulse Leisure is celebrating after Annette Williams, lead instructor of its Cancer Pre & Rehab programme, was presented with a prestigious Mayoral Award in recognition of her outstanding commitment to supporting people living with and beyond cancer.
Annette was formally inducted into the Mayoral Roll of Honour by Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Sue Shinnick, at a ceremony in the Mayor's Parlour at the Civic Offices. She was joined by Impulse Leisure colleague Garry Tapsell, along with Gennaro Filipelli and Robin Wright, both valued members of the Cancer Pre & Rehab group
The Thurrock Mayoral Roll of Honour recognises and celebrates those who have made Thurrock a greater place to live, work, learn and play, highlighting individuals, community groups, charities and businesses that serve the borough in extraordinary ways.
The nomination came from her own class participants, acknowledging the compassion, expertise, and commitment Annette brings to delivering the programme on behalf of Impulse Leisure.

Speaking about her work on the programme, Annette said: "I am truly honoured to be a recipient of this award for the Cancer Pre & Rehab programme on behalf of Impulse Leisure, but feel the real recognition should go to all those brave and resilient patients who have been unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with Cancer.
"It's a life-changing diagnosis that often leaves patients feeling scared, anxious and fearful for what the future holds. However, at this point, they chose to start something completely new and come to a leisure centre to be healthier and more active. They have become such a tight-knit group that offer support to each other, and it's a blessing to be part of."
The Cancer Pre & Rehab programme continues to grow, supporting 291 patients over the past year, with 221 completing the programme across mid and south Essex. It supports people aged 25 to 85+ with a wide range of cancer types, most commonly breast, colorectal, prostate and lung.
The programme supports much more than physical recovery, with many participants reporting improvements in optimism, confidence, relaxation, clear thinking and feeling closer to others. Health questionnaires also showed reduced pain and anxiety, alongside better mobility, self-care and ability to manage daily activities, highlighting the programme's truly holistic impact.
Managing Director of Impulse Leisure, Karl Hayes, said: "We are incredibly proud of Annette and everything she has achieved. The results of the Cancer Pre & Rehab programme speak for themselves, but it's Annette's care, passion and commitment that truly make the difference for people taking part.
"This award is so well deserved and reflects the positive impact she has on the lives of so many individuals and their families."
Annette's Mayoral Award shines a spotlight on the vital work being done within the Cancer Pre & Rehab programme. Her dedication continues to transform lives, offering hope, strength, and community to those navigating cancer treatment and recovery.
