Mike hangs up his walking shoes

ONE of Thurrock's most colourful, charismatic and knowledgeable characters has hung up his hiking shoes after more than a decade of passing on stories about the borough's history on local walking tours.
Many tributes have been paid to Mike Ostler of Park View Gardens, Grays, after he completed his last trip with the T100 walking project.
A leading light in local history circles and a hugely respected advocate for the military services which has included more than half a lifetime's service to the Far East Veterans Association, Mike has been described as 'a tireless champion of Thurrock's heritage and culture'.
Since arriving in Grays in 1974, he has become a cornerstone of the community – from his years of work at Thameside Theatre to his many roles on local heritage groups. He has been chair of Thurrock Heritage Forum for more than 25 years.
His contribution to Thurrock was recognised recently when the award of the Freedom of the Borough was confirmed by Thurrock Council.
After Mike completed his last walking tour with T100 recently, a spokesperson for the organisation said: "A heartfelt thank you to Mike Ostler as he hangs up his walking boots as a T100 Volunteer – a tireless champion of Thurrock's heritage and culture. Mike has been a steadfast supporter of T100 since we began in 2015, generously sharing his remarkable knowledge, insight and passion with us over the years.

"A passionate voice for the community and a true embodiment of energy and dedication – whether on the streets of Grays or behind the scenes – Mike has played a vital role in shaping the stories we tell and celebrate.
"Thank you, Mike, for walking this journey with us. Your legacy is deeply felt and truly appreciated."
