A CAMPAIGN by residents has succeeded in halting plans for a new home to be built on a popular estate street – but the applicants are already planning a second bid.

Thurrock Council planning officers have vetoed permission for the build – and an extension at an existing property at 10 Chestnut Avenue in Grays,

They delivered their verdict after considering many objections from residents, including a petition with 66 signatures delivered by ward councillor Mark Hooper.

The application for the four bedroom home, which was featured on Thurrock Nub News in June, was rejected by planners because of the narrowness of the subdivided plots, the excessive width of the proposed dwelling and the close proximity of the new dwelling to its neighbours.

They said it appeared cramped, overdeveloped and poorly related to the character and appearance of the immediate street scene in Chestnut Avenue. The new building would also remove existing parking and there is a lack of adequate off street parking.

Objections from residents also highlighted potential parking problems and raised concerns about noise and disturbance, properties being overlooked and the potential for unsociable behaviour.

Many of the objections can be read via this link.

Notice that officers had rejected the scheme was delivered on Tuesday, 5 September but just eight days later the applicant, Mr I Virk, and his agent had submitted a second plan – this time for a six bedroom home on the site!

It can be read – and comments posted, via this link.

Chestnut Avenue has been subject to a number of applications for new builds that have won approval. Last week Thurrock Nub News reported on the success of an application close to the junction with Long Lane, while the demolition of a traditional bungalow and its replacement with a contemporary new home, was approved last year despite many objections from neighbours.

This new home on Chestnut Avenue was approved last year.
