RELEASE from captivity have been tree words causing red-faces, embarrassment and anger in Essex recently, but while the county and country moaned and groaned over the saga of Hadush Kebatu – police in Thurrock found great joy in their work that led to the release of a something doing a different type of bird!
While the release of Kebatu, a now deported sex offender, from Chelmsford prison made angry national headlines, the release of another inmate in Thurrock brought smiles and happiness.
During the afternoon of Wednesday, 22 October, officers from Thurrock's local policing team arrested a man on suspicion of driving and theft offences.
During a search of the man's Orsett home, officers discovered something unexpected—a Goldfinch, a beautiful and protected wild bird known for its vibrant red face and melodic song.
Possessing a wild bird without proper authority is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The bird was safely taken into police care and transferred to Orsett Wildlife Hospital, where its status was confirmed as wild.
The Goldfinch has now been released back into its natural habitat.
The 30-year-old was subsequently charged with:
- - Theft
- - Making off without payment
- - Driving without a licence
- - Driving without insurance
A police statement said: "This incident highlights the diverse nature of policing and our commitment to protecting both our communities and the environment."
