CONCERN about the potential danger of the Covid variant Omicron has led to a downgrading of planned celebrations in South Ockendon to mark the switch on of the town's Christmas lights.

Belhus and Ockendon Community Forum which organises the event, due to take place on Friday (3 December) says: "It is with great regret that due to the increase in Covid cases, and the new Omicron variant, the forum has made the decision that the Christmas light switch on will now be a low key event.

"The Mayor will arrive at 5pm and make a small speech before turning the lights on. She will then draw the raffle. We will no longer serve teas, coffees or mince pies or sing carols as planned.

"We apologise for this change but we are sure you will understand given the current circumstances we find ourselves in but do hope to see as many of you there as possible. Should you wish to attend the event please do so in a safe and responsible manner."

The long-planned event and the town lights had been saved by the intervention of local firms to sponsor it, last month.
