Optimism follows meeting with State Cinema owner

A RENEWED sense of optimism followed a meeting on Monday (16 June), organised by Thurock MP Jen Craft, with the owner of the dilapidated State Cinema and interest residents and campaign group representatives.
Owner Naveed Ahmad and Mrs Craft were joined outside the venue in Grays town centre by local people, heritage groups and council representatives, including interim director of Place Claire Demmel.
Locals were quick to point out their love for the building, sharing stories about its impressive past.
Mr Ahmad expressed his commitment to restoring the unique architecture and ensuring that the site is kept open to the community.
He outlined proposed plans to re-open the building as a hotel, keeping original features like the auditorium for weddings and business functions.

Mrs Craft said: "I know how important the State Cinema is to people in Thurrock. It's not just bricks and mortar, it's an important part our local history and seeing it restored is a real priority.
"We spent time reflecting on the cinema's past, hearing moving and powerful stories about what the building means to our community. It's clear why preserving it matters so much to so many of us.
"It was really important to me that Thurrock residents got a proper opportunity to share their thoughts on the future of the building, and I know that locals who joined me at today's meeting were pleased to see the site is in good hands.
"My particular thanks goes to Mr Ahmad, Cinema Theatre Association, Thurrock Cllr Lee Watson (cabinet member for good growth), Historic England, SAVE Britain's Heritage, Thurrock Council representatives including Claire Demmel, , the company who are responsible for the upkeep of the famous organ and the local residents who turned up to show their support for the State.
"Then, we turned to its future; while the owner couldn't share all the details just yet (with plans still going through official processes), what he did share was really encouraging:
"A massive thank you to everyone helped make today happen, as well as all involved in working with me to see this building restored for our community."
