A THURROCK-based educational trust has earned praise for turning around the fortunes of a secondary school in Brntwood.

Ofsted inspectors have given Brentwood County High School a glowing report for the way it supports pupils, particularly those with additional needs.

Of particular note was the 'Strong standard' award for inclusion – a rating above the national standard- with inspectors describing the school's specialist unit for pupils with additional needs as a "notable strength". The unit, known as The House, offers personalised support and inspectors said it was successfully helping young people "build resilience, develop positive mental health and succeed".

The school, which was given a 'Requires improvement' rating by Ofsted in June 2017 under a different management, has been run by Osborne Co-operative Academy Trust since September 2017. The previous inspection in 2022 graded the school good overall.

Stephen Bonnar, Brentwood County High School's headteacher, said: "This Ofsted outcome is a significant moment for Brentwood County High School and one that our entire community should feel incredibly proud of. The report recognises not only the progress the school has made, but also the culture, ambition and care that now sit at the heart of everything we do.

"Inspectors have recognised the calm and purposeful atmosphere around the school, the strength of pastoral care, improving teaching and achievement and the positive relationships between staff and students.

"What makes this especially rewarding is the journey behind it. Staff, students, governors, families and the wider community have worked tirelessly over recent years to move the school forward and this report is a reflection of that collective effort, resilience and determination."

The secondary school has also been told by the education watchdog that "pupils' progress through the curriculum shows an improving picture". Ofsted inspectors have said that teachers at Brentwood County High School have ensured that foundational knowledge is secure in reading and mathematics.

A statement from inspectors said: "Pupils are increasingly developing the knowledge and skills needed for their next steps. Their work reflects their progress through the subjects they study. Improved progress in core subjects and the securing of foundational knowledge in reading and mathematics support pupils' preparedness for future education or employment."
