ESSEX Police had a huge response to the appeal for Christmas gifts for vulnerable children and young people across the region.
A statement from the force says: "We have received more than 10,000 presents across our districts and our officers and staff are working hard with Father Christmas and other partners, including his Elves, to ensure they are delivered in time for the big day.
"Chief Inspector Steve Scott Haynes was our Christmas Gold Commander this year and he says he is not surprised people have been so generous, saying 'I am never surprised by the public's kindness. People in Essex are very big-hearted and this appeal demonstrates that in a visible way. It's wonderful to be able to spread some of that generosity to young people and children who might otherwise have nothing at Christmas.
'Our officers have been working locally with Children Social Care, councils and other organisations to identify families and children where your gifts will make a big difference and to make sure they are delivered by Christmas Day.
'To everyone who has donated presents, helped us to wrap them and to deliver them, I would like to say a huge thank you and wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. Stay safe everyone'.
"Presents are still being donated and Steve says we will ensure that every single one will be found a good home."
Ch Insp Scott Haynes adds: "We have closed all our local district appeals now but any gifts which arrive too late for Christmas will be given to young victims of crimes such as burglary and domestic abuse over the festive season, where it's appropriate."
"As well as Children Social Care, we've worked with local councils, charities, voluntary groups, churches, schools, refuges, foodbanks, hospital children's wards, hospices and social housing associations to make sure all your presents go to a good home."
