Rail minister backs residents and MP over anti-social behaviour and safety concerns around rail station, pledging relevant authorities will be held to account

RAIL minister Lord Hendy has given his backing to campaigners seeking to improve their homes' security and cut down on incidents of anti-social behaviour at East Tilbury rail station.
Residents close to the station, particularly on Stenning Avenue, have been campaigning for several years for Network Rail, the police and rail operator c2c to take positive action following incidents which have included missile throwing that came close to injuring a woman and children.
The actions of young people in the area have caused alarm and consternation and even a genuine threat to life for residents of Stenning Avenue. Other homes have also been targeted.
In one instance a large piece of rock which was used as track ballast was hurled over a fence between the station and homes, narrowly missing striking a woman in the face. Children playing in gardens have also been targeted by missile throwers.

And significant damage has been done to properties, prompting a call for the installation of a protective fence between the houses and station.
The issue has piqued the interest of East Thurrock MP James McMurdock who joined in expressions of concern highlighted in a Thurrock Nub News story last September.
He has contacted the rail authorities and says he is heartened by a response from the minister for rail, Lord Peter Hendy of Richmond Hill.
The peer has offered immediate words of sympathy and support, saying: "I would like to sincerely apologise to residents that are experiencing this level of anti-social behaviour.
"My officials are working closely with c2c to understand the mitigations that can be introduced at East Tilbury to minimise criminal damage and incidents of anti-social behaviour.
"From these discussions, c2c has confirmed that the options under consideration are, and not limited to: increasing onsite security and enhancing patrols; restricting public access to the station and platforms; installing netting, fencing or tree lines; and strengthening messaging around the risks and consequences of trespass and antisocial behaviour.

"Given the severity of the issue, my officials will continue to hold c2c to account for safety failings and ensure that any agreed mitigation measures at East Tilbury station are expedited. c2c will be in contact with residents to discuss the current situation and mitigation options.
"Finally, the British Transport Police has confirmed that it will continue to work closely with partners including Network Rail and the Department to minimise disruption to the rail network, this includes regular patrols, continued investment in technology and campaigns."
