Rail recovery work continues
By Nub News Reporter 29th Oct 2026
WORK is continuing on rail tracks at Barking following last week's freight train derailment, which has caused the closure of stations at Purfleet, Rainham and Dagenham Dock.
They are expected to remain closed to passengers until late next week.
National Rail have given the following update: "The derailed train has now been successfully removed from the site, marking a significant milestone in the recovery operation. This has allowed our engineers to carry out detailed inspections of the damage and begin planning the extensive repairs needed to restore the railway.
"This remains a complex recovery operation due to the significant damage caused to signalling equipment, cabling and other parts of the railway infrastructure, including approximately 1.2km of track that needs to be renewed.

"Disruption is expected throughout next week, although due to the complexity of the repairs timescales may change.
"We are asking customers travelling from Dagenham Dock, Rainham, Purfleet and Grays not to travel. Customers travelling elsewhere on the route are encouraged to check their journey before travelling.
"We're sorry for the ongoing disruption, and we will continue to keep you and customers updated as the recovery continues. "
