STUDENTS, staff and local residents came together recently to mark the official unveiling of the replica of a historic Thurrock landmark.

An event took place at the Orsett Heath Academy in Grays, which began life at its new, purpose-built complex at Blackshots in September last year.

The frontage of the school features a replica of a Carnegie Clock, which once adorned Grays Library on a site now occupied by the Thameside complex.

By a twist of fate the original clock, though beyond repair or restoration, is still kept by the museum that is within the complex.

Former Blackshots ward councillor Joy Redsell came up with the idea of a restoring the original and for it to be featured at the new school, but when that proved to be impossible a copy was commissioned.

The background is told in this Thurrock Nub News story, posted in March last year.

The replica, including a weathervane, was completed and installed at the front of the new school.

A formal ceremony saw borough deputy Mator, Cllr Sue Shinnick, cut a ribbon to mark the replica clock's placement at the new school.
