THURROCK Council has agreed to consider introducing a 20mph speed limit around Kenningtons Primary Academy in Aveley following a petition from parents and residents.
The petition, presented by Cathy Sisterson, Labour councillor for Aveley and Uplands, calls for traffic calming measures on roads near the school, including making Tamar Drive one-way.
Speaking at a full council, Cllr Sisterson said the request came after discussions with the school's headteacher and parent representatives about safety concerns.
"Kenningtons faces major problems with car parking at the start and end of the school day, but this is compounded by speeding and congestion, making the roads particularly dangerous for children and residents," she said.
A survey carried out by the school in May revealed that two-thirds of pupils walk, scoot, or cycle to school, while 70 per cent of parents expressed concerns about road safety—even those who drive their children in.
When asked about possible solutions, 94 per cent of parents supported introducing a 20mph speed limit around the school.
Cllr Sisterson added: "Residents have also raised concerns about speeding cars, and there may even be an argument for extending the 20mph limit across the whole estate. But this petition focuses on the roads around the school, where support is nearly universal."
The survey also highlighted gridlock along Tamar Drive during drop-off and pick-up times, with parked cars blocking traffic and causing arguments among drivers. Parents were asked whether making Tamar Drive one-way could ease congestion, and 86 per cent responded in favour.
"We understand these changes, particularly making Tamar Drive one-way, would impact the wider community, so we'd like a full consultation," Cllr Sisterson said.
Council leader Lynn Worrall confirmed the petition will now go through the appropriate channels: She said: "Residents have been very vocal about the need for traffic calming. Once the petition is handed over, it will be considered as part of next year's programme, with requests approved by cabinet for inclusion in local intervention plans."
If approved, the measures could form part of Thurrock's 2026 traffic management programme, aiming to improve safety for children and reduce congestion around schools.
