POLICE are continuing to investigate an incident that happened late at night at Grays rail station last week.

British Transport Police were called to the station at 11.25pm on Wednesday 1 June following reports of a robbery and serious assault which is beleived to have taken place on the footbridge over the lines.

It has been rteported the victim was stabbed, though police have not confirmed this. Paramedics attended and a man was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries which were not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

A statement from British transport Police says: "The following day a 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and grievous bodily harm. He has since been released on conditional police bail. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing."

The incident is one of a number that have happened in the Grays area recently, the latest being an assault and robbery in Rectory Road yesterday (Sunday).

It's less than six months since Essex Police, who have been working closely with Thurrock Council on crime-beating initiatives in the area, posted of their success in dropping crime rates and anti-social behaviour in the area. And last year council leader Cllr Rob Gledhill was featured in a national police report, prioasing the efforts being made in Grays, when he said: "We know that anti-social behaviour is a cause of real concern for many of our residents. We are committed to working closely with Essex Police to ensure those who commit these offences are stopped in their tracks and the punishment they receive serves as a warning to others."
