Spanish experience is illuminating for borough students

STUDENTS from Grays' Thames Park secondary school recently enjoyed an informative trip to Spain.
A group of enthusiastic Key Stage 3 and 4 students embarked on a Design & Technology and Modern Foreign Languages visit to Barcelona.
The trip offered a vibrant mix of culture, architecture, language immersion, and hands‑on learning—an unforgettable experience that students will be talking about for years to come.
Support Manager Julie Spurgeon said: "Whether navigating busy streets, exploring historic sites, or communicating in Spanish, the pupils represented the school with pride.
"Their curiosity and willingness to learn continued to shine throughout the visit."
A major highlight of the trip was the chance to witness the iconic architectural works of Antoni Gaudí up close.

Students (above) were captivated by the breathtaking Sagrada Família, taking time to absorb its extraordinary detail, scale, and symbolism.
Many were moved by the atmosphere inside the basilica — its colourful stained glass, soaring columns, and serene ambience left a lasting impression.
At Park Güell, pupils were equally inspired.
Surrounded by Gaudí's playful mosaics, organic forms, and sweeping views of Barcelona, students discussed how the architect's imaginative approach might influence their own creative work back in the classroom.

The Barcelona Museum tour was another deeply emotional moment.
As students explored the exhibits, they encountered stories of the city's artistic heritage, cultural identity, and historical transformation.
Several pupils commented on how seeing original sketches, models, and artefacts helped them better understand the context behind the architecture and design they had admired throughout the trip.

Alongside the educational benefits, the trip created opportunities for personal growth, independence, and friendships.
Here are two reflections from students who took part:
"I absolutely loved exploring Barcelona—especially the Sagrada Família. I've never seen anything like it. I'd definitely go again if I had the chance!"
"Park Güell was amazing! I enjoyed the whole trip so much, and I feel like I learned things I'll remember forever. I'd love to go again next year."

Ms Spurgeon added: "The Barcelona visit over half term successfully blended cultural immersion with academic discovery, offering students a meaningful and inspiring way to connect their classroom learning to the wider world.
"Both staff and pupils returned home tired but thrilled—carrying memories, insights, and a renewed sense of creativity.
"With such overwhelming enthusiasm, there's no doubt that future visits will be eagerly anticipated."
