THE book-mad children of Kenningtons Primary Academy in Aveley helped launch National Year of Reading in Thurrock on World Book Day today (Thursday 5 March).

This year has been designated National Year of Reading and Thurrock Libraries has plans to get everyone reading with campaigns aimed at children, teens and adults.

The school was the winner of the Summer Reading Challenge School Shield last year. Kenningtons had 33% of its pupils complete the challenge. Many of the students dressed up as their favourite literary character for World Book Day.

The popularity of reading is dropping in the UK, with just one in three young people saying they read for pleasure in their free time.

Cllr Vikki Hartstean, cabinet member for children's services, education and community safety, said: "Encouraging your children to read for pleasure is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. It improves literacy, it helps their mental health and will give them better opportunities in their life. And one of the best ways to get your children reading is if they see you reading."

Every month Thurrock libraries will have a different theme, with book recommendations for children, teens and adults, but the big emphasis is on reading for pleasure.

March is 'Nature' month with James and the Giant Peach one of the great recommendations for children, Lord of the Flies among the selection for teens and Far from The Madding Crowds for adults.

There will also be free bookmarks and stickers available later in the year and the chance to review and recommend your favourite books for others.

Cllr John Kent, cabinet member for sustainability, art, culture and heritage, said: "Reading is also great for adults. Just a few minutes of daily reading has been shown to reduce stress, improve sleep, boost empathy, and strengthen cognitive function, potentially delaying dementia and extending lifespan.

"Our libraries have a wide selection of titles, including eBooks and audiobooks through the BorrowBox App, all completely free of charge."

Look out for display stands in your local library showcasing the monthly selections, and join the dedicated Goodreads group to share your favourites books.
