IN the wake of yet another crash at the junction of Bradleigh Avenue and Lodge Lane in Grays - Thurock Council is to install speed cameras on the stretch of road in an attempt to cut down on the number of accidents.

Previously the council have denied that there are any issues surrounding the junction, which they reconfigured in 2018, provoking criticism from local residents and motorists that the junction was dangerous.

Now the council says it is speeding motorists, rather than the junction itself, which is the cause of the problem - though is does concede speed is only the "main cause" of the problem and it has acknowledged its has acknowledged residents' concerns that the junction itself may be dangerous.

On Sunday another crash left several people, including a pregnant woman, with minor injuries

Following that, local ward councillor Cathy Kent spoke up again, saying she had repeatedly asked the council to take action but she was being ignored.

Today (Thursday, 17 September) the council has told Nub News its is going to introduce average speed cameras.

A council spokesperson said: "The council has monitored this junction and listened to concerns raised by residents as well as scrutinising police collision records and established that the main cause of accidents is drivers exceeding the speed limit.

"The council will be putting an average speed camera scheme in place along the length of Lodge Lane, between the Treacle Mine Roundabout and Piggs Corner junction to tackle this issue. The scheme is currently in the design stage but is programmed to take place this year.

"Speed limits are there for a reason and that is the safety of our residents. Our road network layouts are made with the speed limits in mind. Those exceeding the prescribed limits are not only putting themselves in danger but also risking the safety of others."
