POLICE are appealing for more witnesses and information following an attack on a services veteran in Corringham on Friday evening that shocked residents and emergency service workers who attended.

The 42-year-old man, a former sergeant who is reported to suffer from a stress related condition after active military duty and is said to be struggling with life, suffered a broken nose and spinal injuries after being attacked by a gang of youths.

A witness to the incident told Thurrock Nub News: "He is another veteran struggling with civvy street. It was a shocking thing. Just a couple of weeks ago everyone was spreading the 'be kind' message then you see this sort of thing. The world's gone mad."

A police statement says: "We are investigating an assault on a man in St John's Way, Corringham, and are looking to speak to witnesses who have yet to come forward.

"The 42-year-old was attacked near Selekt Chicken by a group of people at 8.20pm on Friday 14 August. He suffered a fractured nose and a spinal injury and is recovering at home.

"The suspects, described as a group of teenagers, are believed to have left the scene in a silver car.

"Officers have been progressing their investigation, including speaking to residents and witnesses, reviewing CCTV and carrying out forensic examinations of the scene.

"Anyone with information is asked to call Grays CID on 101 quoting reference 42/126641/20 or report online here.

"Alternatively, you can contact independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
