ONE of the architects of plans to close down Thurrock's Thameside Theatre and the wider Thameside complex in Grays has been waxing lyrically today (Tuesday, 18 January) about an event to mark its golden anniversary!

Communities portfolio holder Cllr Deb Huelin has been one of the leading councillors in the spotlight, targeted and criticised by campaigners who are battling to keep the building alive.

But she has brushed off that condemnation and today spoke of an 'exciting project' to document the 'amazing history' of the complex on Orsett Road, where a special celebratory event will take place on Saturday, 22 January to mark the 50th anniversary of its opening.

A programme of events will be taking place throughout the day including a photographic exhibition, story hunt for children, the launch of the Thameside Complex Living History Project, and a free cinema screening of this year's pantomime including immersive special effects, light, sound and 'a few surprises' to offer a memorable experience for audiences.

Cllr Huelin said: "I know many people have happy memories from the last half century of the Thameside Complex, whether that is visiting the library or museum or attending a theatre performance or wedding ceremony. This will be a day to come together and celebrate that rich history.

"There are some fantastic events planned throughout the day with something for all the family including stories for children, the launch of an exciting project to document the amazing history of the complex and all the people that have used the building over the last five decades, as well as a unique chance to enjoy an immersive screening of the pantomime Cinderella, absolutely free of charge.

"I look forward to seeing as many people as possible there on the day and sharing happy memories with you."

The council announced that tickets for two free cinema screenings of Cinderella would be available to book from 6pm this evening and they are now sold out.

The Thameside Complex and theatre will follow covid guidance which currently requires masks to be worn unless exempt.
