Time to beat the streets in Aveley and South Ockendon

A PHYSICAL activity game that has engaged more than a million people is coming to South Ockendon and Aveley.
Beat the Street will take place from Wednesday, 23 April to Wednesday, 21 May, thanks to funding from a National Lottery grant from Sport England.
The interactive game encourages people of all ages to get active by transforming outdoor spaces into a real-life adventure. Residents will soon notice special sensors called Beat Boxes appearing on lampposts across the area.
Prior to the game, primary school pupils from participating schools will receive contactless game cards, while parents and teachers will also receive cards so they can join in.
The wider community can pick up a free game card from designated distribution points listed on the Beat the Street website. Alternatively, participants aged 13 and over can choose to play via the official mobile app, available for download on Google Play and the iOS App Store.
Players can join a school or community team or participate individually. By walking, cycling, or wheeling between Beat Boxes, players collect points by tapping their cards on the sensors. The further they travel, the more points they earn.
Beat the Street has already made a significant impact in locations across England, increasing physical activity levels, reducing congestion, improving air quality, and encouraging families to spend more time in green spaces.
Cllr Mark Hooper, cabinet member for health and well-being, said: "We are thrilled to bring Beat the Street to South Ockendon and Aveley.
"One of the best things people can do for their physical and mental health is to move more and spend time outdoors. Beat the Street provides a fun, inclusive way for everyone to get active, no matter their age, ability, or background.
"It's free to take part, and you can start right from your front door, helping to turn your daily journeys into an exciting game."
