Tributes to bomber hero Jim on his 100th birthday

By Nub News Reporter   6th Sep 2025

THURROCK resident Jim Gooding was surrounded by family and friends today (Saturday, 6 September) as he celebrated his 100th birthday.

Former Lancaster bomber rear gunner Jim, who flew missions in the Second World War, was guest of honour at a celebration event at the RAF Association club on Southend Road in Grays.

Jim, who was recently granted the Freedom of the borough of Thurrock, has served as president of the club for many years and has been honoured for his contribution to veterans' welfare.

Representatives of the RAF and the RAF Association attended today's event and presented further accolades. Among them was Group captain Dorian James, current commanding officer of 622 Squadron, the squadron that Jim served with during the war.

Among his accolade to Jim he spoke of the qualities required of those who served in conflict and that, to reach the rank of Flight Sargeant, Jim must have been an outstanding member of the squadron. And he went on to say he had shown those qualities through the rest of his life and in service to others.

Entertainment during the afternoon was provided by local singer Geri Lynn.

You can watch the tributes on the film below.
