Borough heroes are acknowledged

THURROCK Council has awarded four local heroes Freedom of the Borough, the highest award Thurrock Council can give, at a ceremony held in the Council Chamber this evening, Wednesday 23 July.
Awards have been presented to Jim Gooding and Mike Ostler.
Jim Gooding has been given Freedom of the Borough for his service in the RAF during the Second World War and his work establishing and supporting the veteran community in Grays and in wider Thurrock, which supporting the RAF Wings Appeal, even at the age of 99.
Mike Ostler has received the honour for his work in promoting the borough's history at schools and community events and his pivotal roles in the Purfleet Heritage Centre, the Bata Heritage and at Coalhouse Fort.
Margaret and Fatima Whitbread have also been honoured for their contributions to the sport and community in Thurrock and for advocating for children in the care system. They were unable to attend the ceremony but will be presented with their awards soon.
Cllr Sue Shinnick, Mayor of Thurrock, who presented the awards said: "Jim Gooding, Mike Ostler and Margaret and Fatima Whitbread are all deserving recipients of the highest honour we can bestow.
"Each of them has added to public life in the borough through their service, dedication and the support they have given others.
"These awards recognise contributions to sport, heritage and community in the borough and are well earned by all receiving them. It is a real pleasure to give these honours to such deserving recipients."
