POLICE officers investigating a recent allegation of bribery in relation to a planning application in Thurrock have made an arrest.

Last month Thurrock Nub News exclusively reported that a police investigation had been launched specifically in relation to a controversial and several-times-defered planning application made to Thurrock Council for a new logistics park in Aveley.

Police have now confirmed that one of its specialist investigative teams has been assessing the allegation.

As part of its continued investigation a member of the public, a 56-year-old woman, was arrested yesterday (Thursday, 28 September) on suspicion of bribery. She has been released on conditional bail until December.

The woman arrested is not an elected representative or an employee of Thurrock Council.

Police and the council have announced that all matters relating to a decision on the planning application in question have been placed on hold.

A statement from Essex Police adds: "This investigation is ongoing and we would encourage anyone with information or concerns to contact us directly by calling 101 and quoting Operation Rome.

Detective Inspector Lisa Hurrell said: "This investigation has moved along at pace, and we have been regular contact with Thurrock Council throughout it.

"We take every report of crime made to us seriously and will always take action when it is appropriate."

It has been made clear by police and council that the investigation is not linked to matters relating to the finances of Thurrock Council.
