POLICE are investigating the sudden death of a child, believed to be aged six, who lived in St Margaret's Avenue, Stanford-le-Hope, in the run-up to Christmas,

A statement from Essex police says: "Our officers were called by paramedics to an address in Stanford-le-Hope at about 7.40am on Monday, 16 December.

"Paramedics reported the child had suffered a medical episode and, despite their best efforts, they passed away.

"Our investigation into the matter is in the early stages and is ongoing.

"A 43-year-old woman from Stanford-le-Hope has been arrested and bailed while our enquiries continue."

Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Hampson added: "This child and their family are in the thoughts of my officers and myself at this incredibly difficult time.

"They remain at the centre of our investigation and I would ask the public not to speculate while we conduct our enquiries.

"Any case such as this is sensitive and complex – work has not stopped since we were called and we will make sure every line of enquiry is explored.

"It is crucial we can carry out our work to establish the facts of this case, and I'd like to repeat my request to the public not to speculate or encroach into the lives of those involved at a challenging time for all involved."
