Sewage blockage resulted in closure of major road and roundabout - Anglian Water call on residents to watch what they flush!
TRAFFIC was badly delayed between Chadwell St Mary and Tilbury today (Thursday, 26 December) due to a blockage on the Anglian Water sewage system which resulted in a spillage and Essex Police closing a busy local roundabout.
The blockage, which saw liquid bursting up through at least three manholes on the roundabout at the foot of Chadwell Hill, caused problems for traffic from around noon, with police closing the busy junction.
That causes problems for spectators trying to attend the Tilbury v Grays Athletic Isthmian League Boxing Day derby at the nearby Chadfields EMR Stadium.
Anglian Water, which deals with sewage disposal, issued differing statements about the blockage and road closure, initially suggesting it was imposed by the local authority, ie Thurrock Council, and that there was only a 20 minute closure.
However, when Nub News supplied photographic evidence of the incident and a police presence, the company issued the foillowing statement at 8.43 this evening: "The flooding from the blockage was cleared by 6:30pm today."
At 9.27pm Anglian Aater issued a firther statemen via a spokesperson who said: "Our teams have been working on Chadwell Hill to clean up flooding. This was caused by a blockage in one of our pipes. Our engineers used tankers to keep local residents' facilities working as usual and protect the environment, and the flooding has now been cleared.
""On average, we clear one blockage once every 15 minutes due to the amount of fats, oils and greases and other unflushable materials that find their way into our region's sewers – and most of these are completely avoidable. Blockages cause 80% of flooding and pollution incidents, and also cost us around £19 million a year to remove.
"To help combat the issue this year, we've installed more than 32,000 new monitors in the most vulnerable pipes on our sewer network, including those most prone to blockages. But we need our customer to do their bit too to keep pipes clear – so please remember to bin unflushable materials, rather than putting them down your sink or toilet."
