A WOMAN has been forced to pay out more than £1,800 after a skip full of food and other waste caused public health issues for her neighbours by attracting pests and vermin.
Samantha Doyle, of Bata Avenue, East Tilbury, was fined £440 by Basildon Magistrates. She was also ordered to pay £1,200 costs and a £176 victim surcharge.
Thurrock Council's Environmental Protection Team took action after receiving complaints from neighbours. The council was forced to take legal action after Ms Doyle refused to listen to warnings and orders to clear the rubbish.
She did not attend the hearing and was prosecuted in her absence for failing to comply with a Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 notice.
Cllr Lynda Heath, cabinet member for public protection, constitutional and civic affairs, said: "It is completely inconsiderate to allow food waste to build up in your garden to such an extent that you put your neighbours at risk by attracting pests.
"I hope that the fine and costs of just over £1,800 here will serve as a warning to others. If you endanger your neighbours and do not comply with statutory notices issued to you we will be left with no option other than to take you to court."
