THURROCK councillors will continue to receive an allowance of £9,200 a year for their basic duties, with members who take on special responsibilities getting paid additional amounts depending on their role.

Council leader Rob Gledhill, for example, will be paid a total of £41,400 a year while a cabinet member gets £21,700.

WILD flowers could be sown along the side of the Manorway following a call by members of the public to improve the look of the local landscape.

A petition was delivered to Thurrock Council in October calling for more wildflower borders to be created in Thurrock, with the Manorway through Stanford-le-Hope and Corringham highlighted as a special case.

THERE is a growing sense of disquiet in a Thurrock community over the increasing impact of lorries on the local environment - and possible risk to pedestrians and motorists.

Though East Tilbury has a long history of transport and environment issues because of the proximity of the former Mucking tip, recent developments have seen a number of sites opened up in the neighbouring countryside that has brought an increase in lorry traffic.

Jail for Grays shop thief

A MAN who was arrested by Grays Town Centre Team officers during an attempted shop theft has been jailed.

Dean Crooks, 33, of Seabrooke Rise, Grays, received five months for assault by beating and two months for attempted theft, to run concurrently, when he appeared for sentencing at Basildon Crown Court. He had previously pleaded guilty to the offences.
