Disappointment for Rocks as early optimism fades away

By Neil Speight 15th Dec 2019

Horsham 1, East Thurrock United 0

EAST Thurrock left Horsham's impressive new ground on the end of a narrow defeat that might have been much heavier but for the intervention of the woodwork - though they will rue not taking advantage of the first 20 minutes of the match which they dominated.

The Rocks were quick out of the traps and pegged their hosts back.

Several early chances came and went begging as the ball frequently flashed across the face of the Horsham goal - and the Hornets were grateful for one fingertip save from keeper George Bentley.

However, when the game's decisive goal came it was at the other end, when Gary Charman showed great awareness and anticipation on 23 minutes, launched himself at a cross into the box and volleying the ball home from close range.

Within a minute Rocks had a great chance if an equaliser, but in contrast to Charman East Thurrock's Darren Foxley was reactive rather than pro-active as a ball came into the box and he waited for it to bounce rather than attacking it and the opportunity went begging.

It would be churlish to single out Foxley, his teammates were all guilty of the same sin.

Rocks had plenty of the ball but they waited for something to happen rather than trying to force the issue.

Half time came with Horsham unlucky not to increase their lead when the ball was smashed against the crossbar and in a lukewarm second half they hit the post and upright again, while East Thurrock posed no threat at all.

It would be difficult to argue that Horsham didn't deserve the win which keeps them well in contention in the play-off zone while East Thurrock will need to regroup before their derby with AFC Hornchurch next weekend.
