Millers complete cup shock and now face derby on the road to Wembley
Aveley 2, Carshalton Athletic 0
DESPITE the addition of eight minutes of added time, there was no escape tonight (Monday, 16 December) for Carshalton who thwarted Aveley's giant-killing ambitions on Saturday with a 96th minute equaliser.
This time, on their own Parkside ground in a Buildbase FA Trophy replay, Aveley fulfilled their role as giant-killers and earned a history-making place in the last 32 of the competition – where they will have a derby against near neighbours Hornchurch.
There was drama in the closing stages of tonight's match when Millers keeper David Hughes had to leave the pitch with three minutes to go – handing a debut to Under 23 stopper Daniel Blockey.
However. Aveley saw out the added time to complete a momentous night in the club's history – progressing this far for the first time in the Trophy.
Aveley were up for the cup tie against opponents who sit one level above them in the play-off zone of the Bet Victor Isthmian Premier and Alex Akrofi had an early chance when he got in behind the visiting defence but his shot was wide of the goal.
It didn't take long for them to take the lead, though. On eight minutes a fine cross from from Wyan Reid was met by the head of George Sykes who found the left hand side of the goal.
Carshalton responded with efforts from Tommy Bradford which was tipped over the crossbar by David Hughes and then Paris Hamilton-Downes saw his flick go just wide.
And on 35 minutes the home supporters were sent into raptures when a corner from Raad was met at the back post by Harry Gibbs who was – as he was on Saturday in a similar situation – was unmarked as he headed into an unguarded net.
Millers took the two goal lead into the break and more than held their own in the second half.
Half chances came and went at both ends in the second half but Millers had a grip on the game. And even the injury to Hughes, sustained in a late collision with his own player, Sam Mvemba with ten minutes to go that ultimately saw him having to leave the fray, couldn't loosen it as Miller held out for a famous win. They will now go to near neighbours AFC Hornchurch (also from the Bet Victor Isthmian Premier) on Saturday, 11 January and will believe that after disposing of the Robins they have a realistic chance of making the last 16.
