Millers top the table

By Neil Speight 26th Jan 2020

Aveley 4, Witham Town 2

TWO late goals from Witham couldn't take the gloss off Millers' comprehensive victory that took the clear at the top of the Bet Victor Isthmian North.

The hosts were quickly on the offensive and went close when Alex Akrofi shot from the edge of the box.

More pressure followed and visiting keeper Rhys Madden saved from Harry Gibbs and then Wyan Reid's shot was deflected wide.

The deadlock was finally broken on the half hour when George Sykes smashed the ball home after two earlier efforts were blocked.

And Millers went into the break two up after Akrofi netted in the last minute of the half.

Two became three in the second minute of the second half when Gibbs' header looped over the keeper.

Akrofi grabbed his second on 65 minutes when he collected the ball on the right and cut inside before firing home a shot that went in off the post.

To their credit, Witham kept going and Aveley took their foot off the gas, allowing Marcus Bowers and Scott Kemp to net in the 85th and 90th minutes but by then Aveley were home and hosed, and with Heybridge Swifts surprisingly losing at home to Basildon they moved a point clear at the top.
