FOOTBALLERS played out a local tournament recently that double up as an act of Remembrance.

Members of Grays Athletic Walking Football Club and guest players made up four teams of six players who challenged for the annual Passchendaele trophy at Lakeside Sports Ground and also raised funds for the Poppy Appeal.

Passchendaele in Belgium was the scene of one of the biggest battles in the First World War, the third battle of Ypres on the Western Front taking place between July and November 1917.

The tournament was started with an Act of Remembrance led by one of the players, Rod Oakley, who is also chairman of Grays Thurrock Royal British Legion.

The tournament ran with two pitches side by side and completed a round robin set of games.

Most of the games were only separated by a single goal and the teams played with great spirit. This was followed by semi-finals in which all four teams participated and then a final was played out which resulted in a drawn match.

Rather than have penalties and because at that point the heavens opened and it was tipping down with rain it was agreed the trophy would be shared.
