Unlucky debut for borough fighter but club has a night to remember

By Neil Speight 4th Dec 2019

TOM Barrett, 27, from Aveley, was unsuccessful in his debut professional appearance on Friday at York Hall in Bethnal Green.

Despite winning the opening round, a clash of heads caused a severe swelling and cut under his right eye in the second round, and the game plan changed to protecting the eye.

His more experienced opponent, Chatham's Charlie Shane, took the result 39-37 on the referee's scorecard.

Tom will be back in action in the new year.

Meanwhile, the following night, West Thurrock Boxing Club went undefeated when competing at the White Collar Boxing League card at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet.

They managed to achieve six wins and a draw on the night.

This Saturday (7 December) sees three of the West Thurrock team in action at the IBA show at the Circus Tavern.

After that, the club anticipates a return to action in February or March for the unlicensed/white-collar fighters.
