THE death has been announced of a well-known, much-respected borough businessman, local character and family man.

William 'Bill' Yallop was the owner and founder of Yallop & Son's yard on Dock Road, Tilbury, which operated from the late 50s until late 70s and he was also owner of Grays Auto Spares on Clarence Road from the early 60s until the eighties.

Before having the business he also served in the Royal Navy in the 40's as a stoker.

Bill married his wife Muriel in 1950 at Grays Parish Church and they recently celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. The couple had three children Julia, Billy and Jon who were also known locally. Julia passed away almost four years ago after suffering with Motor Neurone Disease.

Bill, who was 96, passed away on 10 January in Basildon Hospital after a very short illness.
