Tribute to a Saga lout: Much-loved Dick Newman is remembered by his friends

By Neil Speight 28th Nov 2021

TRIBUTE has been paid to a much-loved and respected member of the Stanford-le-Hope and Corringham community who passed away in the week.

Richard (Dick) Newman was well known for his work with the Stanford Air Cadet Corps (ATC), for who he was a prolific fundraiser, and was also a popular figure at East Thurrock United FC where he was a frequent supporter at home and away matches.

One of those who knew Dick best is David Meacham, who first worked with David at Orsett Hospital and then closely with the ATC.

Mr Meacham has penned this tribute to his friend: "I first met Dick in about 1972 when I joined Orsett Hospital. He was one of the 'strong' team of porters, when porters were respected and knew more about the hospital than most others.

"As I assisted in the social club bar, in the car park area, I got to know Dick, and the group around him and their drinking habits. Always seemed to be a happy man. I lost contact with him after February 1978 when I started a new job away from the hospital.

"However, our paths crossed again as his son John, joined Air Cadets, Dick was soon elected to the CWC Civilian Welfare Committee, and then to Chairman of the CWC. His enthusiasm with assisting the cadets carried on even when John left.

"Dick was always arranging fetes and raising money for the cadets. And assisting as and where he could. Nobody could refuse his pleas for money or his requests to put up a stall, to raise funds for the cadets.

"Dick was an active member of the Remembrance Group for Stanford. As well as a member of the Royal British Legion (Horndon and Stanford-le-Hope). And an avid football enthusiast.

"When Orsett shut down, he was transferred to Basildon where he was always busy around the hospital, and everyone you spoke to who knew Dick, from both hospitals, thought well of him. I know there are lot of people who will miss him terribly.

"My sincere thoughts to his wife Kathy, and the family. "

Another long time friend is Terry Keating, one of the founders of East Thurrock United, who told Nub News: "Dick will be missed by all the regulars at Rookery Hill. He was always happy to help out at games with voluntary stewarding and any jobs that needed doing. He was a member of our group of older fans that became known as the 'Saga Louts' as we followed the Rocks around the country and was, quite simply, a top bloke."
