Lawn Bowls: A timeless game in decline - but still so much fun and good for you!

IN recent years, lawn bowls, a sport once celebrated for its camaraderie and competitive spirit, has seen a noticeable decline in players and participation. Across the region, clubs are feeling the pinch as fewer people take up the game. But while the numbers may be dwindling, the benefits and sheer enjoyment of lawn bowls remain undeniable.
Lawn bowls, which involves rolling weighted bowls (or "woods") towards a smaller target ball, known as the "jack," offers a perfect mix of strategy, precision, and social interaction. The game's simplicity is one of its best features—players of all ages can pick it up and enjoy it without needing to be athletes. It's the kind of sport where you can play at your own pace, making it accessible and welcoming.
So why is participation dropping? Many clubs are seeing an aging population of bowlers, and the younger generation has shifted their focus to other recreational activities. Busy lifestyles, alternative sports, and changing social habits have meant that fewer people are choosing to play lawn bowls.
This decline has had an unfortunate consequence: many local councils have been forced to make tough decisions. Some have started closing clubs and selling off the land that once housed these iconic community spaces. These closures are a blow to the sport, as they not only diminish the physical presence of the game but also erode the social hubs that lawn bowls clubs have long represented. With each closure, a piece of local history is lost, and the chance for future generations to experience the sport becomes more uncertain.
However, those who still play can't say enough good things about the sport. "It's a great way to relax, enjoy the outdoors, and meet new people," says John, a long-time member of one of the local lawn bowls clubs. "You don't have to be a pro to have fun. It's a very friendly community here, and we all support each other."

Beyond fun, lawn bowls also brings a host of health benefits. Unlike high-impact sports, lawn bowls is gentle on the body, making it ideal for people of all fitness levels. The game requires focus, hand-eye coordination, and balance—all while you're outdoors in the fresh air. It's a fantastic way to keep both your body and mind active. Research even shows that the low-impact nature of lawn bowls can improve flexibility, boost circulation, and reduce stress.
Moreover, lawn bowls is one of the most socially engaging activities around. Clubs regularly host social events, competitions, and gatherings, making it a fantastic way to build new friendships and connections. The supportive nature of the lawn bowls community means you'll never feel left out or unwelcomed, regardless of your skill level.
But for lawn bowls to thrive again, local clubs need new blood. And they're actively encouraging newcomers to join the fun! Many clubs in the area are offering open days and introductory offers to help newcomers experience the sport. Whether you've never picked up a bowl before or have played in the past and are looking to return, there's a place for you.
So, if you're looking for something fun, social, and beneficial to your health, why not give lawn bowls a try? It's time to rediscover the joy of this classic game, meet some great people, and maybe even become the next champion bowler in your area. But time is of the essence—if we want to preserve these clubs for future generations, we need to show the councils that lawn bowls is worth supporting.
Local lawn bowls clubs are actively seeking new players. Get in touch with your nearest club to find out how you can get started before more valuable spaces are lost forever!
